“Signature style” is one of those fashion phrases that gets thrown around a lot, but what does it actually mean? The idea of discovering your own personal style is often too heavily weighted on celebrity style icons.
I am going to attempt to define what I consider Style to be, but first I wanted to share with you the following article which has some great and easy tips to help you discover your own personal style.
One of the quotes that defined style the best for me was this one from Gore Vidal: “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
Finding (and refining) personal style can be a struggle; we’re the first to admit it. We’ve all been there at least once, if not multiple times, as we gaze into our closet full of clothes and need something for different occasion.. Regardless of what life throws at us, it’s important to be able to adapt while still maintaining a style that is all our own.
And why exactly is this important? The impact of personal style goes far beyond making a good first impression; great style is also about approaching each day with confidence, and the ability to feel legitimately beautiful in what we are wearing. Believe it or not, the right wardrobe can make a difference in that department.
Style is as much about knowing about yourself as well as knowing what you want to portray. If you are assured of this knowledge, other people’s opinions don’t really matter.
How to find that confidence in yourself and your style
1. UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY
Knowledge is power. So the first thing you need to understand is what kind of body you have and what works for you. If you have a good understanding of your body shape and your strengths and weaknesses, you can buy the right clothes to either accentuate or camouflage them.
Whether you’re looking for a total style overhaul or to try something a little new this year, there are some simple steps that can make you like what you see when you open your wardrobe each morning. First, you need to understand your body shape and how to dress for it; then you can start to identify what makes you feel confident.Taking pictures as well as looking in the mirror will help spot the silhouettes that you should rely on. If you pay close attention to celebrities with similar shapes to you, then you’ll be able to spot the silhouettes that always work for them.
2. REFLECT YOUR STYLE TO YOUR ON PERSONALITY
The perfect wardrobe should not only represent your vision and creativity, but also be tailored to your lifestyle. Consider the person you want to present to the world. You want your style to reflect your personality, but it also has to make sense in your field of work, your overall lifestyle, the city you live in and aligned with your long-term goals.
There’s so many different fashion styles, I think you guess it which one is mine, (the trendy fashionista) but of course with different occasion our style changes but we also remain with our mood and which style will suit us better! Do you feel that your style reflects your personality? Have a look at various different styles. Which do appeal to you most?
3. WHICH COLOUR INSPIRE YOU?
Colours can also have a huge effect on your style and how you feel. Understand how certain colours make you feel. If you don’t use much colour in your current style, you may start to experiment a bit by adding bits of colours through accessories and see how these make you feel.Read up the colours that suit skin tones.
4. MAKE YOUR OWN STYLE ICONS
Try to identify the components of your style and only follow the latest trends when they fit your style.Write down the names of your favourite style icons and do a bit of research via Pinterest, Google, or Instagram to gather inspiration from their looks. Whenever you see others wearing clothes you admire or like, try to get a picture and paste it in a note or scrapbook or pin it on Pinterest. After a while, you will see a pattern developing of the kind of styles that you like. Take note of that and remind yourself about this style before going for the latest fashionable trend.
True style defies fashion trends. Although it is nice to add some trendy pieces each season, you should only go for the trends that suit you. Try to wait for a trend that suits you and then buy several pieces.
5. INVEST IN ITEMS YOU KNOW YOU’LL REWEAR
A successful signature style is one you will love for years and years, and so your focus should be on wearing the things you truly adore. One of our favourite wardrobe-editing tricks is to have a separate rail and for one month place everything you wear on this rail—you will quickly realise the items that are the building blocks of your wardrobe.
6. STOCK UP ON ACCESSORIES
Accessories are, without a doubt, the easiest way to pull any look together regardless of the vibe you want to achieve. You can update jeans and a white t-shirt with a bold necklace or pair layered, delicate jewelry with a dress for a more feminine feel. A cool ear cuff or stacked rings can give you an instant edge, and pearls can make you look polished and lady-like in an instant. Add a patterned scarf, opt for edgy ankle booties instead of your normal black pumps, or pull out a bright clutch to add more personality.
Make sure your wardrobe contains all the necessary basics for your style
If through all of the above you got a clearer sense of what you like and what suits you, you need to determine if you have the basic essentials necessary for your particular style.
Take a good, long look at your closet and the pieces you already own. Toss what you haven’t worn in the last year so you can start fresh. Then you can begin to rebuild and refine your wardrobe with a style that truly reflects where you are in your life and career.
7. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS AND BE AUTHENTIC
Something that makes you feel confident and beautiful is never out of style.
The single most important thing when developing your style is to be true to yourself. Don’t focus on the size or the designer label (this will only hinder your creativity!). Continue to experiment with different patterns, textures, accessories, and shoes. It all boils down to feeling good in your own skin—your style should reflect and celebrate your life, your individuality, and personality.
“Own your style, be proud of it, and embrace fashion as a way to express who you are and who you want to be”.
I remember being told : that I “dressed for the job I wanted, not for the job I had” and I always remember that moment. I stayed true to my taste and what I felt best in, and people noticed. Trust your gut, because something that makes you feel confident and beautiful never goes out of style.
I’ve always had a passion for defining my own style and I find keeping up to date with the latest trends and articles either through dedicated Fashion magazines or Fashion Influencers, helps me gather enough trending information I need to define and create my own unique style. I’ve always loved fashion and keeping up to date with mainstream and edgy trends isn’t always easy, but it certainly is essential, even when defining your own style. So stay current with the trends, identify your style and own it! Be unique and creative!
